This rule is unprovoked, unjust, and ageist. There are no events of press that describe anyone under 18. The administration of MacArthur Center Mall claims that it is for the safety of those under 18, but this is obviously a facade. 17 year-olds can operate a vehicle at 65 miles per hour legally in Virginia alone; yet cannot spend money in MacArthur’s establishment. Children who are shopping alone are doing so with the consent of their parents. If MacArthur Center Mall is really worried about the safety of children or of anyone else, they would commit to more security measures in order to make their patrons feel more secure.

Sean Krieger wrote Me and my mom on yall side. I also want to mention they're gonna be a walk to protest against the curfew. It call walk to ROCK ON and it stand for Reach Out for Community Kidz it Saturday November 7th at 1pm two mile walk from Macarthur Mall to the Hunton YMCA and just showing that kids need something do and a postive and Safe Environment. So Spread the Word to your Friend. Just ask me I'll try get more details. Leamon Austin wrote WE make mcarthur NO one is goin in hot topic or american eagle or journeys or vans except for our age group HOpe the mall likes being broke hahaha Tidewater Log wrote to everyone under 18 - buy a cane and a fake moustache. Learn how to use the cane in a realistic manner and place the fake moustache on your UPPER lip. You'll be able to hang out wherever you want for as long as you want! Kierra Bryant (Grassfield High School) wrote Honestly, McArther is just begging to lose business. In fact, I'm headed to Lynnhaven today. I'd much rather be at McArther but with this rule and my schedule, I cant. It's bs, and needs to be changed. Period. Susan Hudson wrote coming from an "old person" who thinks you are getting hosed-- you should try appealing to the stores that you normall y go to-- hot topic, apple, etc and get them on your side~~ they have to know that smart business doesn't mean kicking out your primary demographic... get them on your side and you might have a fighting chance! good luck-- its a shame that a few bad apples have ruined it for the bunch! Kaitlynn Nicole Grovesteen wrote This is very unfair wen i go to the mall i shop at places like hot topic and my mom hates going in there and i dont think i will bring my dad into victoria secret this is stupid and not needed Michael Hewson wrote I am 40 and I disagree with this policy. So now I cannot drop my 16 year old Son off with his girlfriend or other friend(s)to see a movie? Or to go shopping? MacArthur has more than enough money for adequate security and hired off duty Norfolk Police, to deal with unruly teenagers. They have done it for 10 years, and now all of a sudden, they cannot do it anymore. You don't throw away the Baby with the bathwater. They need to do their jobs and only target those that are causing trouble, and evict them. ALSO, VERY IMPORTANT! hit them where it hurts. Anyone that has made purchases in the last 30 days, espclly large purchases like Apple Computers, RETURN THEM NOW! Go to Best Buy!. Apple Has to be one of the Largest REVENUE streams that the Mall has. Malls get a % of sales. If you Return your Apple Products, believe me, Apple has a lot of pull. They will not be happy with them. Make sure you say there is a problem with it. Take back anything and everything from ANY STORE! Levar Mitchell wrote i talked to someone at Barnes & Nobles at Macarthur who said there were angry parents calling the mall 5 am, complaining about the new policy. So, it's not just teenagers voicing their displeasure. I'm 30 years old, but I have to say, this is a lousy policy. Why would they do this when the economy is slow and stores need as much revenue as they can get. Andrew Stuart (Grassfield High School) wrote they should have made guidelines. its completely stupid, because there have been no incidences that warranted this idiotic rule. This rule is supposed to "protect" kids, no scratch that, teenagers, from what exactly? how is this rule helping protect all of the teenagers in norfolk, and any teen who goes there? It can't. the State of Virginia trusts teenagers to drive a car, holding their lives and anyone with them in the palms of their hands, but going to the mall after 5 is strictly prohibited? I just see this being a GRAVE mistake on the part of the owners of the mall as well as anyone who had to do with this rule. now teenagers have to find other places to hangout. and where is that gonna be? a park? where there aren't any security cameras? They took the local hangout spot, and made it into a place that we are no longer welcome. The mall will get rid of this stupid rule soon enough. No teens means less profits. OH WELL! we just gotta wait it out. James Nauert (The Virginian Pilot) wrote In addition to the many fine points below consider this for the upcoming holidays... "Mac on ICE" is going to have a cold reception (pun intended) when kids under 18 can go skate right outside the mall but dare not step foot in it... So much for helping retailers of the mall get into the black for fiscal 09. Andrew Benfante (Great Bridge High) wrote actually on their website macarthur says that if you work there and your under eighteen and your shift runs past or starts after 5, you're allowed to work. you just have to leave as soon as youre done Debra Frech wrote I think it is completely self-destructive of Macarthur Mall to even consider this, they must be trying to put themselves out of business. It lacks common sense. If they said anyone under 12 year old, I could understand but 18, there are 16 years old working jobs and they have to be with their parents to walk in a mall after 5pm? Doesn't make sense. Cindy Weddle wrote Please don't forget the soldiers who are under18 and can fight for the USA but not shop after 5 PM. There is something wrong with this picture. Can you just imagine carryng a gun but not a shopping bag from Macauthur Center!!!!!! We need to get ALL military to boycott this mall. Kevin Crow (Virginia Tech) wrote macarthur suckssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss Katie Wallace (CNU) wrote I was never the hang out at the mall type, but young adults should have the right to hang out without their parents being forced to hover over them. I can agree that those under say.. 16 should have an adult around, but those people 16 and older should be allowed to have a place to just hang out with friends and have fun. I support your cause ! (~21 yr old college kid) Oh, that news story was good for you guys. It certainly got my attention =). Yay for local news. Samantha Lucus wrote get organize and do somthing about it you have more power than you think. don't sit back and do nothing if it means that much then get old school with it march stop trafic learn your rights and make a stand they did it in the 60 and 70s why cant we do it now. its not a war but its still not right STAND UP SPEAK OUT FIGHT BACK !!!! ill be there if anything goes down Kristen Hardley Johnson wrote I was going to take my daughter to this mall for her birthday next weekend. She'll be 14.. Due to this policy change, I will be taking her to Lynnhaven Mall and giving them our money!! Upset mother of a teen! Barb Lemon Benfante wrote As I said elsewhere, to assume that teens are the only irresponsible people in the mall is ridiculous. How about the over 40 year olds who have too many beers at Chili's or (my least favorite) the parents of small children who don't pay attention to them and let them run amok. If you are 17 and a TCC student and need to go to Barnes and Noble you need a 21 year old chaperon? And if you are 17 you can buy a ticket to an R rated movie in that very mall but you need your mommy to walk you to the box office and meet you when it's over? Maybe they could be like Dolores Umbridge and restrict all teens to groups no larger than 3...okay I'm done. Brent Phillip Hildebrand (Great Bridge High) wrote If you boycott it. they wont get business. they will then have to change it. idiot Kat Krug (Hickory High School) wrote I think this is my favorite comment from the poll, guys "If parents could properly raise their children to be respectful young adults, then this would not be an issue. Unfortunately, bleed heart liberals have created a society where you cannot even spank your child without it being called abuse. "Time out" --> laughable punishment. Also, many were disgusted with McDonnell's 30 year old thesis, recommending women should stay away from the work-place. He should have said "mothers", not women in general, because he would be CORRECT! Now we have daycare raising our children, not the parents, and as we all know, daycare facilities will administer ZERO discipline in fear of liability lawsuits. So, let's all pat ourselves on the back for raising disrespectful, Columbine killers, getting lazy on technology! We did it to ourselves via a weak-minded liberal society!" Ashleigh McNew (Tallwood High) wrote I'm 19, so this doesn't apply to me. But this is retarded beyond any kind of reason. I used to go to MacArthur all the time when I was 16 with just friends. If they're doing this simply because people under 18 don't buy stuff after these hours, they're shooting themselves in the foot. Tammy Desnoyers wrote Comments: I have shopped MacArthur many times and never seen unruly teens and never felt unsafe. Ofcourse, I try not to judge a book by it's cover and I love teens. BTW, I remember many years ago my bro and sis-n-law were at Lynnhaven and someone shot a gun in the food court. Lynnhaven took care of it without banning teens. Also, this means teens can't ... go to a movie at the mall? Or how bout dinner before prom at Kincaids? or Look at how many stores at MacArthur cater to teens. Also, what about the young mother (say 19/20) who now can't shop with her young child because she herself is under 21? How do they intend to enforce it? Will they start IDing everyone who looks like they are under 18? Harassment! I personally find it absurd to ban an entire population because of a few bad eggs. Shall we banish all old men from the beach or pools because one or two are pervs? This is age discrimination no matter how you look at it and the only reason they can get away with it is because the target population is underage. BTW, according to the reports I have read they have not had any bad incidences this was decided to avoid the potential. Say What? Anyway, sorry for ranting, discriminating against teens is one of my pet peeves. Our society discriminates against them and people have preconceived notions that all teens are bad news and then we wonder why they feel misunderstood? Few bother to take the time to understand them and embrace their interests and passions and encourage them to fullfill their destiny. We want them to be prepared to lead the world tomorrow and expect them to be responsible and act like adults now but don't want to offer them the opportunity to learn to navigate those waters. Yes they will make mistakes sometimes; we all do, even adults. But give them a chance! The arguments favoring the ban sure sound similar to racism arguments of the past. Instead of pick our cotton but don't shop at our stores or eat with us; flip our burgers but don't shop at our stores or eat with us. Maybe the problem isn't the teens but the few adults who refuse to respect them and are "fearful" of them, for whatever reason. Their fear is propagated by ignorance not truth.
